About HAZMAT

About Hazmat image

Hazardous material training is the number one way to prevent and reduce hazardous materials (hazmat) incidents caused by human error. All hazmat employees are required to follow the statute (49 U.S.C. 5101, et seq.) pertaining to the transportation of hazardous material within the United States. This is a Federal hazardous materials transportation law. This is for ANY employee of a company that handles hazardous materials.

What are the training requirements?

Each hazmat employer must train and test their hazmat employees, certify their training, and develop and retain records of current training. Hazmat training must include, or be:

  • general awareness and familiarization.
  • function specific
  • safety
  • security awareness
  • in-depth security training if a security plan is required
  • driver training (for each hazmat employee who will operate a motor vehicle).

What is the frequency of training?

Initial training must be completed within 90 days of employment for new hazmat employees or an employee who changes job functions. Recurrent training is required once every three years. Please note, the three-year period begins on the actual date of training.
